What began at the 2009 Toronto SummerWorks Festival will continue in less than 48 hours as Nicolas Billon’s award-winning play, Greenland, gets its United States premiere at the New York International Fringe Festival (FringeNYC). Greenland opens at the Player’s Theatre in Greenwich Village Friday, August 12th at 5:15pm (for a full performance schedule, click here).

In September 2005, an island was discovered off the east coast of Greenland. Originally mapped as part of the mainland, the receding ice sheet has ‘revealed’ it to be an independent land mass. Greenland re-imagines the story of the island’s discovery within the framework of glaciologist Jonathan Fahey’s family. Set adrift after a devastating loss, the increasing distance between the Faheys now mirrors that of the island from the mainland. When the play premiered at SummerWorks, it received the highest possible rating from NOW Magazine and played to sold-out houses throughout the festival. By the end of its run, Greenland had picked up the festival’s two most prestigious awards (Outstanding Production, Audience Choice).

Ravi Jain, formerly a core member of Josh Fox’s New York-based International WOW Company whose recent Canadian credits include the premiere of George F. Walker’s King of Thieves at the 2010 Stratford Festival (as Asst. Dir.), helms Greenland. Two actors from the Toronto cast of Greenland’s acclaimed premiere return to the roles they originated: Claire Calnan (whose original performance in Greenland helped earn her the title of NOW Magazine’s Top Theatre Artist of 2009) and Andrew Musselman. Joining them is New York actor and Ruined (MTC) veteran Susan Heyward.
