As part of the first ever Preview of the Arts festival at Joe’s Pub in New York City, The Bridge Theatre Company will present a staged reading of Matthew MacKenzie’s Toronto Fringe hit SIA, previewing the company’s workshop of the piece, slated for early 2011. Winner of the 2010 Alberta Playwriting Competition, SIA is the fast and furious story of a former child soldier who takes a Canadian university student hostage in a Liberian refugee camp in West Africa; a challenging look into the complex relationship between North America and Africa. When the play premiered at the 2010 Toronto Fringe Festival, it received five stars from Eye Weekly and was named Outstanding New Play by NOW Magazine. The presentation will feature SIA’s original cast (including Jajube Mandiela and Brendan McMurtry-Howlett of Degrassi: The Next Generation, as well as Thomas Olajide, a recent graduate of the prestigious National Theatre School of Canada) and will take place Sunday, November 7th at 4:30pm. Mr. MacKenzie and the cast will take part in a talk-back with the audience following the performance.

Preview of the Arts, an initiative launched by Artist Collective NYC, will comprise three days of performances, talks and readings at Joe’s Pub, and will also feature contributions from Adam Rapp, John Patrick Shanley, Joe Iconis, American Place Theater and Museum of the Moving Image. For the first time in New York, artists and arts organizations from various fields and communities—Broadway, Off-Broadway and downtown theater, film and television, interdisciplinary work and more—will come together to offer the public a glimpse at their upcoming projects.
